Moretonhampstead
Originally intended as a private sporting estate, Bovey Castle was lavishly constructed in 1906 under the ownership of Viscount Hambledon, son of the business baron WH Smith who was also First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. Every effort has been made to maintain the estate in keeping with its original style. In the grounds, the extensive borders and herbaceous gardens have been replanted with traditional Victorian specimens to create fine vistas of year-long colour. Ornamental garden furniture, follies and pavilions have been carefully restored and thatchwork roofs reinstalled. The dining room is fitted in the style of a 1920s Art Deco Palm Court, containing chinoiserie hand-painted wall coverings. Meals are prepared using fresh local produce wherever possible, creating innovative seasonal menus that utilise estate-grown herbs, honey and vegetables. Drinks can be taken in the lively Oak Room and Piano bar, with relaxed music played by the resident pianist. Around 150 different cocktails are offered. A Wine Tasting also takes place in the cellar every evening. A wide range of indoor and outdoor activities are available for children, catering for all ages. The swimming pool, housed in the Orangery opens onto The Sun Terrace and outdoor pool with stunning views of the National Park. An extensive menu of nearly 50 health and beauty treatments are on offer.
